Job description

Unlike assembly lines, job shops use general-purpose machinery, which is grouped by function to enable diverse tasks, ranging from prototyping to custom fabrication.
Customization & High Variety: Products are often one-off, unique designs (prototypes) or small batches.
Process Layout: Machines with similar functions are grouped together (e.g., all drill presses in one area, all lathes in another) to allow flexible routing of jobs.
Skilled Labor: The process relies on highly skilled workers who can set up and operate multiple types of machines and manage diverse tasks.
Jumbled Flow: Jobs do not follow a standardized, linear route. They move from workstation to workstation based on specific requirements, often visiting the same machine multiple times.
High Setup Times: Because products vary, machines require frequent retooling and configuration changes between jobs.
